Brawley, California is a small town in the central Valley of California. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Brawley is located in Fresno County and is part of the Fresno-Madera metropolitan area. It is bordered by Visalia to the east, Saugus to the north, Chico to the west and Madera to the south. The first human settlement in what would become Brawley was made on May 15, 1873 when prospectors from San Francisco camped on land that now includes most ofmodern-day Brawley. The name "Brawley" originates from a Native American word meaning place of plenty or abundance. The post office at Brawley was established in 1876 and renamed for General John A. Davis after he became governor of California in 1877. By 1880, there were 50 residents living at Brawley but it soon grew into a small community with a school and store. On December 6, 1886, Ulysses S Grant arrived at Brawley for his visit which marked one of history's largest land transactions ever - he purchased 2 million acres (801 km2) of Rancho Niguel from Amador Mexican Land Company founder Manuel Nieto for $15 million dollars including 500 miles (800 km2) of water rights! Not only did Grant purchase this large tract of land – more than two times as large as any currently held by farmers – but he also donated it back to Mexico within five years! With this new purchase came increased attention to ranching in Southern California due largely to its potential for irrigation water supplyAvailable until 1913 these vast holdings included portions now used for farming communities such as Porterville and Hanford Today much smaller parcels still make up part or all of what once constituted Rancho Niguel This witnessed major change not just because Grant had given away so much land but also because he had vested interests in seeing those holdings develop into productive agricultural societies On February 12th 1893 President Grover Cleveland signed an act authorizing the United States Geological Survey (USGS)to study suspected Stimson faults near where present day Porterville sits These faults have been linked with ancient movements along fault lines that have contributed significantly to recent earthquakes In 1905 USGS surveyor William Hutton named local streams after three men who had played significant rolesin helping lay out Stanislaus National Forest - Will Rogers (1851-1936), George Custer (1863-1937) and James Phelan (1857-1922). In 1908 an addition 10 miles northeast of current town boundaries was granted Federal interest number 97528 by Judge James Fenton Turner Jr who ruled that since there were no federal lands immediately adjacent thereto it could be claimed without waiting for notification from Congress However local groups lobbied vigorously against this decision until 1916 when they won approval from then U.S Senator Hiram Johnson To date no property has been officially designated as belongedethat group however some members believe their efforts bore fruit when section 571(b)(1)was finally added to Bureaucratic Lands Management Act on June 14th 1979 giving them accessto over 1 million acres formerly administered through various state agencies including Mono County There are presently over 350 officially registered organizations associated withthe restoration effort which numbers over 7000 active participants nearly 60% women
