Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. At the 2010 census, its population was 1,814. The community began as a small ranching village on the banks of the San Joaquin River in 1881 on land acquired by early settler John P. Brawley and his wife Eliza Jane (Haggerty). It was named after Brawley's ancestral home in England. The Brawleys were among the first Europeans to reach what is now Kern County, and they helped develop agriculture there. The original post office opened in 1881 and was renamed Brawley in 1915 after rancher James Haggerty donated land for it. In 1923, the name change was again due to competition from other towns that had been established nearby since then: Del Norte (1924), Sahuarita (1929), and Yuba Valley (1935). In 1911, when California became an independent country, parts of Kern County were transferred to that new state including parts of Brawley. The population of Brawley increased rapidly during World War II because many local citizens volunteered for military service; this also led to increased building activity around the town and its five schools. The post-World War II growth slowed slightly until the late 1990s when telecommunications advancements made it possible for more people to live close to work or school without having much impact on real estate values in surrounding communities. The most recent large influx of people has been from Mexico who have families fleeing violence there; however, their presence has not led to significant changes in demographics or social patterns within Brawley itself.
