Airguns became popularized in the 1920s when they were used to shoot targets out of a gunsmith's shop window for fun.
Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California located on the San Joaquin River. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code for Brawley is 93614. The area that would become Brawley was first settled by pioneers in 1847. It became a Mexican land grant in 1848 to José María Cámpora and Narciso López de Herrera. The U.S. military occupied Brawley during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), giving it to Captain John Sutter of the United States Army Corps of Engineers on February 15, 1849 as part of General Santa Anna's campaign against American forces operating along the riverbank east of Yreka. In 1851, George Waddell platted out what would become Brawley on two hundred acres (0.81 km2) north of present day Highway 395. In 1862, Judge Elijah Pound bought from Juan Miguel Aguilar four thousand acres (16 km²) around present day downtown Brawley for $1 per acre ($27 per hectare). This area became known as Pound's Rancho Seco and later by its current name: Brawley Creek Rancho Park (). In 1902 an act was passed by Congress providing funds for a water project called "the Central Valley Project." This project involved building canals across the San Joaquin River to bring water from Lake Oroville downriver to Stockton and other parts of California through both urban areas and agricultural regions; ultimately increasing irrigation agriculture in central California by 50%. The original idea behind this canal system was to divert more rainwater runoff into local rivers rather than send it downriver all the way to Sacramento where it could be used for drinking or agricultural purposes downstream; however, when completed only 16 miles (25 km) of this channel were actually built before being abandoned due to difficulties connecting different parts of the state with their new source of water supply! After World War II ended, development increased in western Kern County due largely to overpopulation growth and government support for new housing developments such as those near Los Angeles and Phoenix during the postwar boom period which followed World War II throughout America. However, progress towards infrastructure development stalled until 1968 when Supervisor Don Webb initiated plans for a bypass road around downtown Brawley which would connect I-5 with State Route 99E/I-580 via Exposition Park south of town center; this bypass project remains one of Kern County's most well known landmarks today because it helped spur economic growth within downtown Brawley while also improving traffic flow within town limits over time. Brawley, California was founded in 1867 by James Brawley and his wife Anna. The town is located in the Kern County seat of Bakersfield, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. It was named for a ranch that James had bought in 1866. The first businesses in the town were post office, hotel, bakery, livery stable and forge. In 1870 the Brawleys built a small mill on their property which became the largest flour mill in California. In 1902 James died and Anna took over management of the mill until her death in 1944. The mill closed down in 1951 but it reopened as an antique store and museum in 1988. The store still operates today with a display of old California farm equipment, tools and furniture from the 1800s to 1920s. In 1976 Brawley voters passed an ordinance designating May Day as California's State Flag Day. The flag is flown at half-staff all day on May 1 throughout most of California including Bakersfield where it is also flown at City Hall during special events such as mayoral inaugurations or city council meetings.
