Blythe is a small town in California. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name Blythe comes from William Blythe, an American merchant who lived in the area in 1847. The town began as a water stop on the journey between Sacramento and Stockton. In 1859, it became known as Blytheville after developer John Leary named it for his wife, Bertha (besides Margaret). By 1870, businesses had begun to grow up around Main Street and West Main Street. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1880, there were also stores and a hotel along Main Street. In 1898, when America purchased land east of Blytheville that would become Rancho Bernardo, development began there too with additional shops and homes being built on East Valley Road near present-day Interstate 5. The community continued to grow until 1925 when it amalgamated with neighboring Belmont to form Blythe-Belmont-Merritt which had a population of 2,000 people. Blythe experienced its peak during World War II with many residents helping out their local military units or working at local munitions plants; however, since then the town has slowly declined and has only had a population of 724 as of 2010 according to the US Census Bureau

Blythe, California (formerly known as Blytheville) is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 14,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and the largest city in Kern County by population. The first permanent settlement in what is now Blythe occurred on July 3, 1847 when twenty-six men from Bakersfield founded a rancho called Rancho San Miguel de la Paloma east of present-day Blythe. On October 12, 1848 the name change to Blytheville after then-Governor John Sutter's wife bribed him with $100 for his support of her husband's new Mission San Gabriel Arcángel grant. The first post office opened in November 1850. By 1860 there were over 100 residents and it had become an important trade center because of its good water supply and position near irrigated agriculture on both sides of the Kern River Valley. In 1862 Union General Don Carlos Sumner ordered all Californians to leave their homes until further notice because he believed they were conspiring against the U.S government; this order led to a number of skirmishes between pro-slavery forces and pro-Union forces in what is now Kern County. In 1865 Union General Jubal Earlynaissance into Lompoc Valley discovered gold and began claims nearby; accordingly, on December 11th 1865 Blythe became part of Placer National Forest which was created adjacent to federal land that had been given to California by Mexico following the Gadsden Purchase Treaty of 1846. During World War II Japanese troops burned down part of town on September 13th 1945 during their occupation while American troops fought back using firebombs dropped from bombers over southern California
