The name "Blythe" is derived from the Anglo-Californian word "blythe," meaning a meadow or pasture. The community was founded in 1892 by brothers Harry and Albert Blythe as a place for themselves and their families to raise crops and livestock. It became an agricultural center due to its location on the Kern River floodplain which provided ample water resources for farming. During World War II the town was one of several located along Route 66 between Reno and Victorville that generated automotive manufacturing jobs during the post-war boom period. However, by 1970 most of these factories had closed down because of technological advances and competition from other countries' automotive industry. Today, much of Blythe's infrastructure has been abandoned or mothballed; however, some remnants remain including two active churches (one Congregationalist) as well as two outhouses that are still in use today. The first store opened in 1892 in what is now known as Building 2 (now part of the Ralphs grocery store). A second store was built on Main Street in 1916 but burned down within months. The third store opened on November 6, 1926 at 727 S Broadway Ave., just east of downtown Blythe. This building still stands today with its original glass storefront windows intact save for some fire damage which has since been repaired/repaired multiple times over time.. In 1978 local entrepreneur Donny Boyd bought the building next door to him at 729 S Broadway Ave., renovated it into his business databank company called DONNY BOYD ENTERPRISES INCorporated (DBEI), doubling its size and reopening as THE GEOGRAPHIC GALLERY OF CALIFORNIA – BLYTHE until 1993 when ownership passed away to his son Jay Boyd who continued operations until 2000]. It wasn't until 1990 that DBEI moved into their current facility located at 801 W 5th St., across from Raley’s department store which served as their headquarters until 2001 when they sold the property to Caltrans for $5 million dollars making it one of only a few properties remaining undeveloped within city limits after years of discussion between developers and city leaders about potential uses for the site[ During this time period many businesses vacated downtown due to rising rents rates but also because crime rates were dropping throughout Kern County] . Blythe, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about an hour east of Sacramento and 10 minutes south of San Francisco. The population was 3,684 at the 2000 census. Blythe was founded on October 15, 1875 by George C. Blythe and his wife Mathilde Snider as a small town on the banks of the Rhein River in what is now Fresno County. At first, it was known as "Brantwood", after one of George's father's farms in eastern New York State. In 1876, when Brantwood had a population of seventy-eight people, it became part of what would become Kern County. The first post office in Blythe opened on March 1, 1877. The name change came about because residents objected to being called "Brantwood" since that term carried negative associations with nearby Rancho Niguel (now Needles). On November 8, 1886, the name was changed to Blythe after Mrs. Blythe's sister-in-law Elizabeth Beattie (1828 - 1912), who served as mayor and treasurer for Kern County from 1888 to 1890 and also played an important role in founding the University of Southern California (USC) in 1891. In 1903, voters passed a resolution asking incorporated cities within Kern County to get their own constitutions so that they could decide whether or not to be part of the new county government; however, this request was never implemented due to lack of support from local officials. In 1907–1908 an attempt was made by then-Kern County Supervisor John Lummis to merge what were then two separate townships into one entity but this proposal met strong opposition from both the townspeople and other county officials due to land issues associated with merging two townships into one place without proper consideration for them – which caused future conflicts between Los Angeles County and Kern County over authority over shared resources such as water rights and development opportunities). The only thing preserved from these days is some interesting bits found throughout history like old English maps dating backto 1610 which show evidence indicating there may have been another settlement here before Hastings arrived!
