The history of target shooting in Blythe, California can be traced back to at least the early 1800s. The first dry-fire range in Blythe was established by Captain John Tiller in 1814. By the turn of the 20th century, there were several locations throughout town where people could go to shoot rifle and pistol targets. One such location was the old millrace on the south side of town that still operated as a shooting ground into the 1960s. In 1922, a new dry-fire range was opened at the Iverson House on Hill Road. This facility continued to be used until 1978 when it was replaced by what is now known as Blythe Range #2. At this point, target shooting had become an institutionalized practice in Blythe. One of the most important factors that helped contribute to gun culture in Blythe was its location within easy access of other communities for residents to enjoy target practice and learn how to shoot firearms. From 1895 until 1932, there were two public schools located within walking distance of each other in downtown Blyth; these schools were used as firing ranges for schoolchildren and their parents alike. As a result, many people who resided in rural areas east of Sacramento learned how to shoot firearms during those years too. Payson Leland who had been killed in an automobile accident on July 2, 1901. The Rev. Blythe, California is a city located in Kern County, California. The population was 17,878 at the 2010 census and 18,592 as of 2019. It is part of the Bakersfield–Murphy Corridor metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1903 by John A. Blythe and his wife Maud Purdy. The original name for the town - "Blythe", after Mrs. Blythe's sister-in-law - was changed to its present name in 1913 by then Mayor George Sibley. In 1923, Blythe became the first city in Kern County to have electric lights and streetlights installed along Center Street. Today, many businesses and residences still use electricity from local generators or power grids that were built before deregulation began in 1978. In recent years, development has occurred on both sides of Center Street: north of downtown is an upscale shopping district known as Park Boulevard; south of downtown is a much more working-class district called Main Avenue which became known for its large number of fast food restaurants during the late 1990s recession following the fall of dot-com stocks prices (relative to other cities). Downtown also contains several art galleries and antique stores which line Center Street between West First Avenue and West Second Avenue
