Blythe is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Bakersfield and the western edge of Kern County. The name comes from an early settler, John Blythe, who named his ranch "Blythe" after his home country of Scotland. The town has a long history dating back to 1836 when it was founded as a gold Rush community by General George Custer and his men during their failed attempt to find gold in this region. In 1868, Blythe became the first incorporated municipality in Kern County. The post office opened in 1876 and remained open until it closed on December 6, 1969. In 1951–1952, Blythe was one of five towns within the Mojave National Preserve which were among the first to be developed for development as part of Project Airdrop which aimed to establish national boundaries for water resources. The town contains several shopping malls including two major ones - Chinook Mall and Valley Fair Shopping Center - as well as two smaller malls: Lakeshore Mall and Old Mill mall. There are also several restaurants and bars located throughout the town center including Applebee's Fine Chinese Cuisine (now known as Jack Daniel's), Burger King (now known as Wendy's), TGIFridays Pizza (), Dairy Queen (), Jamba Juice (). There is also a large video game store called GameStop located in downtown Blythe which has been operational since 1997; it is currently being renovated into an all-inclusive resort with its own pool/SPA area complete with whirlpools/Turkish baths (). Additionally, there are several professional golf courses located within or near the town limits; these include PGA Westwood Golf Course (), PGA Pacific Hills Golf Course () and PGA Rancho Mirage Open COURSE (). From east to west adjacent streets in Blythe run North Dakota Avenue (a street leading from I-5exit 10 south), Garden Boulevard (a street leading from I-5exit 12 north towards Lankford), Prairie View Road (a street running east-west through central Bakersfield) then Cottonwood Road (an alley connecting Prairie View Road with Garden Boulevard) before terminating at Farm Road 505 just outside of town limits. Many residents commute into Downtown Kernville or other nearby cities by officially designated Route 66 corridor that runs northeasterly through much of Kern County paralleling Interstate 5 between Bishop City andVisalia

Blythe, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of California. The population was 1,753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville metropolitan area. The first people to live in Blythe were two white men who came to the area in 1879. The first post office was established in 1880, and the first store was opened by Wm. Hinkle and Bros. In 1886, Hinkle donated land to make way for a school district. A new courthouse was built in 1911, and it served as the town's main square until 1954 when a new courthouse was built on Richards Road across from town center. In 1916, Blythe became home to its own water system when ranchers bought land north of town for a reservoir known as Crystal Lake Creek Dam. The town also had its own telephone company from 1922 until 1956 when Western Electric took over operation of the phone company for all towns within CA-9 (Mojave Desert). In 1942 during World War II, General George Custer's 5th Cavalry Regiment used Blythe as their winter quarters while they camped near Mono Lake west of Blythe on what is now Groom Canyon National Monument(). After World War II ended, most residents left or were forced out by development around them since there wasn't much farming potential here once so many people had left for work elsewhere in California during that time period The last resident to live in Blythe died on July 14th 1988 when his wife Shirley passed away after an extended battle with cancer . At her death shewas one of only three women ever buried privately within CA-9(Mojave Desert) at that time Since then there have been sporadic visits from family members but no permanent residents have come back . There are plans being made to build a house next door to where Shirley died but because it would run afoul of local zoning laws it has yet to happen
Blythe is located in the San Joaquin Valley and was founded by farmers in 1887. The city's name comes from a local stream, Blythe Creek. The city was incorporated in 1912 and became a part of Modesto, California in 1937. In 1980, Blythe joined the Greater Stockton Area Metropolitan Statistical Area.
