Blythe has a colorful history that can be traced back to 1846 when gold was discovered in nearby San Bernardino County by prospectors led by George Custer and his friend Kit Carson. This initial excitement led to the town being founded on November 15th of that year by pioneers including James Waughy and John Fremont with $5 per capita in funding from US President Polk. In 1868, Blythe voted to become an incorporated city under state law but it only lasted until 1902 because investors were not interested in the Accessibility Act then being passed which prohibited towns from becoming incorporated without first receiving city approval. The community slowly grew back up over time with a focus on agriculture as its mainstay income source until 1959 when a new shopping center called Star Valley Shopping Center opened up just east of town along Interstate 10 which helped bring more people into town although production dropped off after that point due mainly to competition from neighboring cities such as Riverside and Ontario Hills across I-10 . In recent years there have been some redevelopment efforts taking place with private developers starting up businesses within the old Stary Valley Shopping Center while also building housing developments outside of town near various golf courses . Despite these efforts though, steady loss in employment has kept Blythe struggling economically even as population growth has resumed somewhat recently . Blythe is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas-Monterey-Kingsburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1879 by George Worthy and his wife Bessie. They were two men who had come from nearby San Gabriel Valley to find a new home after their families were driven out of their old homes by gold Rush fever. In 1881, they donated land to the town for a school and church. The first post office opened in 1882. The early years of Blythe were very challenging because there was no water available for irrigation or farming; however, over time, this has changed as irrigation systems have been installed and the town has developed its own economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, services, and tourism. In 1951, the community became one of three communities in Kern County chosen to participate in the California State Water Project (CWP). As part of this project, CWP constructed five dams which provided water for various purposes including farming, municipal use, and industrial needs such as pulp mills and power plants. Today Blythe still relies heavily on CWP for water supply with nearly all residents using groundwater or surface water sources either directly or through shared cisterns with other communities within CWP boundaries
