Blythe is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 10 miles east of Bakersfield on State Route 36. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, Blythe has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all of it land. The community began as an agricultural settlement established by postmaster John Pritchard in 1887 on 6 acres (2 ha) near present-day Highway 36 and Park Road. A year later, Pritchard donated another acre (0.40 ha) for village development and named it after his daughter, Blythe Hinchcliffe Pritchard." In 1902, Alva Dickey settled in what is now Blythe with his family and opened a general store that would become one of Kern County's most important businesses. In 1915 he sold his interest in the store to Waddell Sibley who operated it until 1962 when it was purchased by Jimmie Durst from him. Durst also operated Muddy Waters' first blues band from 1948-1951 before moving to Oregon where he founded Durst Records. "Durst's Store" still stands today as a museum inside the Main Library complex within walking distance of many local restaurants including The Barnyard BBQ & Brewery & progressive steak restaurant deconstructed into individual "patios". In addition to itsStore namesake products such as WD-40 cleaner etc., Durst also carried newspapers items like The Daily Review and other papers from nearby communities during this time period like Bakersfield CA Weekly News which still exists online! This museum showcases over 150 years worth of history for one stop shopping!"
