The name Blythe comes from an 1849 gold rush settlement called "Blythe Landing". The privately owned Blythe Mines and Manufacturing Co., began operations in 1886 and continued until 1943 when it became part of the Republic Steel Corporation. In 1951, Republic Steel merged with Alcoa and employee benefits were eliminated as part of that merger. Today there are a few small businesses left that use Alcoa products but most people rely on small independent companies for their services which continue to thrive thanks to strong unions local residents have formed over time. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,971 people, 1,827 households, and 1,463 families residing in the town. The population density was 3/km² (10/mi²). There were 2,421 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (24/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White alone and 0% African American; Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0%. Of all households 7% had children under the age of 18 living with them,[1] 44% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present; 38% were non-families; 25% of all households consisted of individuals without a job; 8% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older; and 6%,
