The Berry family ran a grocery business until 1861 when they decided to move to what is now Blythe. In 1865, the brothers bought a piece of land east of town and began to build a railroad station. By 1870, the Berry Station had been built and it became the primary market for local farmers. The eastern half of the current town was platted in 1894 by Hiram Sutch and Alfred Ellsworth as "New Town". According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,759 people, 586 households, and 439 families residing in the town. The population density was 54 people per square mile (21/km²). Blythe, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Blythe, England. The first settler in what is now Blythe was A.D. 1848 Edwin Hargrave of Donner Pass fame who homesteaded on the east side of mountain range called Diamond Mountains and built a log cabin near present day Cottonwood Canyon Road. This site became known as Hargrave's Meadows due to its association with this early settler. A post office was established at Blythe in 1857, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In October 1860 Wm C Bardney arrived from San Francisco and set up a store at the junction of what are now Cottonwood Canyon Road and Highway 99W about midway between today's Blythe and Kernville; he named his business "Bardney's Store." He also erected a small adobe house which still stands on Main Street near today's Post Office building (now part of the Kernville Chamber Of Commerce). In 1863 Jno Nolen came overland from Nevada via stage coach to establish himself in what is now Blythe along with his wife Fannie Jane McCulloch Nolen including their two children John and Clara Nolen, who later married local rancher George Armstrong Smith II; they soon had ten families living around them within one year or so of arriving thereabouts: four more families followed during 1865-1866 when Gold Rush Fever struck the area; these were brought by several prospectors then working the claim below Newhall Ranch west of present day Big Bear Lake before departing for various parts of America either directly orvia wagon trainloads en route to goldfields elsewhere: John Sanger, Hiram Chaffee Sr., James Irvine etc.. On July 10th 1870 David Waddell Homesteaded on Carson Mesa just off present-day highway 99W & Cottonwood Canyon Rd.; he named his land "Waddell Ranch" after General Andrew Johnson’s father-in-law Drury Waddell (1792-1868), Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary Of War & Commandant At Camp Fremont UST During The Mexican Border Campaign 1846-1847.) For many years this site served as an encampment for cattlemen pasturing their stock on nearby hillsides; afterwards development here largely centered around ranching activities with some commercial ventures starting up here during WWI & WWII too.} By 1902 there were about 120 residents living inside OFR PASSAGE w/ 5 stores all clustered together btwn Washoe Valley Rdns & Clarks Valley Rd} By 1910 there wuz only 8 residents left liveng inside OFR PASSAGE n single store
