High Capacity Kits (HKC) were developed in Berkeley, California during the early 1980s as a way to improve the performance of storage devices. At its peak in the late 1980s, HKC was responsible for increasing the capacity of many high-capacity laptop and memory cards. In recent years, however, HKC has been largely replaced by flash drives and SSDs in favor of faster storage options. A key aspect of HKC's success was its ability to increase card capacities without modification or rewiring of existing hardware or software installations; it relied instead on application programming interface ("API") applications designed specifically forhardware tweaks such as those used by Apple Computer's Mac OS X Lion operating system during its period of greatest growth in desktop computing power between 1985-1996). In 1847, Berkeley became a state capital, and in 1868 it became the capital of California. The University of California was founded in 1923 and has since become one of America's most prestigious universities.
