Berkeley, California was founded on April 1, 1795 by Captain James K. Polk and his men as a trading post on the Navy island of San Francisco Bay. The first permanent residents were three Spanish Missionaries from Alta California: José de Urquiza, Antonio López de Santa Cruz and Manuel Nieto. The area now called Berkeley was part of Alta California until 1848 when it became part of the United States. In 1851, Berkeley became a city and in 1868 it became the capital of California.
