The first rifle scopes were made by Holland & Holland and they were mounted on rifles imported from England. 1st Lt. George A. Armstrong, commander of Company C, 8th Cavalry was so impressed with the quality of these new scopes that he ordered 2 sets to be mounted on his horse's saddlebags as part of his campaign against Indians in 1894-1895. Over time, other local businesses began to install Rifle Scope Mounts (RSMs) on their properties for their own firearms use or to show off their products to visitors from out of town. As RSMs became more widespread and popular, Benicia quickly became known as the "Scoped City" because of it! Benicia is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 11,752 at the 2010 census. Benicia has been home to people of Spanish and Mexican descent since its founding in 1846. The area now known as Benicia was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. In 1847, Mexican immigrants from Baja California arrived in attempt to build a new life in what is today Contra Costa County. The town name (originally called "Benedictus") may be derived from this group's hope for better treatment under Mexican rule than they had received from the U.S. government at that time. The first post office was established in Benicia on October 15, 1850 with Wm Halsey as the first mail carrier. By 1860, there were three newspapers published in town: "The Californian", "The Valley Republican" and "The Daily Californian". A sawmill and grist mill were built around 1865 and 1870 respectively; these mills powered the early growth of the community. In 1871, two young men named William Mullen and Jameson Daly started a foundry near where present-day Interstate 880 crosses Clear Creek River (now part of Hercules Boulevard). This early industrial development helped shape Benicia into an important commercial center during its early years; during one period between 1881 and 1901 it ranked second only to San Francisco as America's largest city without a large port or seaport! One of downtown's earliest landmarks is First National Bank building which stands today on Third Street between Main and Webster Streets NW cornering Northwest Plaza Drive NW also known locally as Bradley Roadmark which dates back to 1886 when First National Bank moved into their current location after moving out of their original site on Second Street near Central Avenue . That same year streetlights replaced candles atop nearby buildings until 1906 when electric lights became available!
