Benicia is a city in Northern California, United States. The population was 7,671 at the 2010 census. Benicia is located in the East Bay region of San Francisco County and is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on Telegraph Hill and borders Contra Costa County to the south, Napa County to the east, and Solano County to the north. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Spanish missionaries in 1797-98. One such missionary, Father Felipe de Neve y Uribe y Crockett, erected a small chapel for his own use near where present-day North Avenue and Second Street intersect today. In 1833 Jameson & Son founded a store on Mission Road which became one of town's most important businesses. When new Streets were laid out in 1849-1850 (present day 1st Street South and 5th Avenue), Jameson moved his store across 2nd Street from where it currently stands to make way for what would become North Park (now University Ave.). In 1865 John Coddington established an apothecary shop on First Street which still operates today as Coddington’s Pharmacy. In 1876 Ayer & Armstrong opened their first mercantile store at Fourth and Vine streets cornering present day Market Place before moving west along Market Place into what is now known as Ayer Plaza later renamed after Fenton Hamer Ayer who served as City Clerk from 1886 until 1904). On August 29th 1861 Mayor George Wickersham leased land off 3rd street between Howard and King streets from Nicholas Singleton for $1 per acre with title changing hands 4 times over the next few years until finally handed over on October 10th 1862 by Mayor Abraham Lincoln “Abe” Levy with instructions that it be used for public square or park purposes only; this site would eventually become known as Benicia Square today! It wasn't until 1895 when local resident Lorenzo Snelling erected a large wooden cross atop Mount Diablo called "The Cross" - now consideredone of Benicia's most distinctive landmarks - that city officials decided upon creating what would become North Park (now University Ave.). A fire destroyed much of downtown Benicia in 1906 but did not damage North Park; this event marked the beginning of what would be an ongoing revitalization effort led by mayor Willis Rouse who declared 1909 "the golden year" for benicioid development including installation of electric lights throughout town followed by demolition/ reconstruction of many buildings including The Cross which was rebuilt at Soldiers And Sailors Monument hill overlooking downtownBenicia circa 1915-1920

Benicia is the most populous city in Butte County and one of the largest cities in Northern California. It is located on the south bank of the Sacramento River, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Sacramento. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were Jesuit missionaries from missions in 1776 and 1777. Francisco Xavier Cabrillo explored and mapped this area in 1542 when he sailed with Hernando de Soto across the Bay of San Francisco. In 1821, José Joaquín Cámpora founded a mission here which became known as Our Lady's Missionary Department (OIMD). This was replaced by an independent mission called Benicia after General Antonio Jóvenes Cerda's victory over Mexico at Estero del Diablo on November 27, 1825. With its rich soils and strategic location atop high hills overlooking both rivers, Benicia quickly grew into one of the most important cotton-growing towns in America during the late 19th century.
