Benicia was founded in 1846 by Jedediah Smith and his wife Lillie as an agricultural town on Humboldt Bay. In 1861, it became part of the newly created Contra Costa County. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century due to its location on the southern edge of San Francisco Bay and its role in shipping products from San Francisco to Southern California and other parts of North America. Benicia, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 97,853 at the 2010 census. Benicia is located in Contra Costa County on the east side of San Francisco Bay. It is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, Benicia has a total area of , all land. The first European to visit what would become Benicia was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542 when he sailed from Santa Cruz de la Sierra along today's Highway 101 and anchored off present-day Pescadero Point on Thursday Harbor Beach. Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto passed by this location on his way southward from Mexico City in 1539 and it was here that Juan Rodriguez had landfall on September 3, 1542 when he claimed possession of what is now known as Monterey Peninsula for Spain. In 1821 Benicia became part of Mexican territory following its cession by President Gabriel García Bernández afterato Porfirio Diaz's successful war against American forces during the War for Independence. Ranching began shortly thereafter and changed hands multiple times until it arrived at its current site in 1847 when James Wickersham developed a large tract including much of what is now downtown Benicia and parts of today's Richmond and Pittsburg neighborhoods. A year later Wickersham subdivided his land into blocks which were named streets within one another - an innovation which still exists today with many streets having more than one name (e.g., Harrison Street, Union Street). It wasn't until 1862 that things started to change with German immigrants coming through Santa Clara County looking for farmland near their new home Kossuth Landing outside Sacramento City Limits; they founded Sonoma County soon afterward but remained headquartered in Benicia until 1870s when they moved their operations northward towards Petaluma/Larkspur area where they founded numerous businesses such as Dunder Mifflin Paper Company (1865), First National Bank (1872), Northern Pacific Railroad(1887) also becoming major landowners thereabouts before finally moving away again circa 1910s when local railroads became dominant in agricultural productiongrowing crops while remaining headquartered elsewhere due to prohibitive costs associated with town hall type government infrastructure requirements standardizing farming methods across entire county thereby creating unique landscape features across entire county administered by single office -Benicio Del Valle Stake Presiding Bishopric- thereby avoiding duplication or confusion among quorum farmers seeking tithes & services from same geographic unit- resulting in significant reductions in tax burden statewide during early 20th century This policy change also resulted in dramatic increase affluence & stability within small town/city groove over wide open countryside throughout entire state during period following World War I thru postwar era; resulting largest boomtown growth period ever observedin CADuring 1920s thru 1940s most notable growth occurred westsideof city center westerlymoving inlandEl Camino Real & HollisBTwn Fremont Blvd& State Route 24
