Benicia, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 99,814 at the2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and one of its three cities. Benicia's economy is based on agriculture and natural resources. The city has a strong history with firearm cleaning kits dating back to 1867 when it became part of Redwood City. In that year, the town of Benicia was founded by Captain George Fenton and his family on land purchased from the Cahuilla people. A shooting range and gun store were also built in Benicia during this time. In 1933, Mayor John Sutter ordered all guns to be destroyed because of the Depression-era pandemic known as "the flu." Gun stores throughout Contra Costa County were closed due to lack of customers or storage space. By 1934, ownership of the range had passed from Fenton to Jens Jensen who renamed it Jensen Firearms & Supply Company before moving it to larger premises at 701 12th Street in 1935. In 1939, Jensen merged with another firearms company, Richardson Armory Corporation (RA), which would become one of Contra Costa County's most prominent businesses for many years to come. On November 25, 1968, Benicia was incorporated as a city pursuant to Proposition XXIII (The Gun Cleaning Kits Initiative). At that time there were only 3 other cities in Contra Costa County: Pleasanton (1961), Vallejo (1963) and Newark (1965). Incorporated as a city meant that Benicia had additional rights and responsibilities than other municipalities such as providing police services or having zoning authority for specific types of businesses/properties etcetera etcetera

It is also one of Northern California's most diverse cities with a growing Hispanic population. The site where Benicia now stands was first inhabited by Native Americans as early as 1776. In 1846, when California became a state, Benicia became its second incorporated town after Mill Valley to be part of the newly created county. The town developed around an agricultural center which attracted settlers from throughout Northern California as well as Mexico and East Asia. In 1869, when San Francisco was established as its own separate municipality within Contra Costa County, Benicia became part of that municipality too. From then until 1907 it served as the seat of government for both municipalities combined before becoming the only City in Contra Costa County by resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors on October 15, 1907. During World War II, many civilians were incarcerated at Camp Florence located near present day Hercules (Hercules River) due to wartime rationing restrictions placed on local municipalities by War Department planners under suspicion that they would not be able to provide essential services such as policing or firefighting should hostilities break out again locally. As a result of this policy decision and because there were no other suitable facilities available in nearby Isleton or Pleasanton during those years there continues to be criticism levied against this particular location today alleging that conditions there amounted to human slavery
Benicia, California was founded on October 24, 1847 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Boggs Polk. The town was named for General Jose Antonio Benicia, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from California. The first post office in Benicia was established on March 14, 1848.
