In recent years Benicia has become known for its agricultural products such as almonds, apples, tomatoes and other vegetables; its manufacturing base includes tire manufacturing and plastics production; and its tourism industry which includes visits by famous people like U2 frontman Bono and President Barack Obama in 2009.

The Benicia-Meadows Valley area is the most populous region in Contra Costa County and it surrounds the downtown core and to a lesser extent the suburbs of Hercules, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek and Dublin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Benicia were men from Portugal on July 3rd, 1769 when Captain Anastacio de Navegaria sighted land which he named Santa Cruz de la Sierra but never landed on because it was too rocky. He gave this spot to Juan Bautista Loma who named it after his patron saint Benicio del Valle (1724-1794). On October 8th 1846 Manifesto No. 4 issued by Mexican president Antonio Lopez Portillo granted Rancho El Valle to Americanist general Mariano Pacheco for $5,000 with an intention of establishing a town there called Villa San Francisco de Asís or "Valley of Arms". This town would later be renamed Benicia after General José Joaquin Bernardo Benítez y Valdivia who hadOccupied Mexico City in 1821 during the Mexican Revolution. On January 11th 1850 A bill was passed by the state legislature entitled An Act To Promote Commerce And Navigation In Contra Costa County Be It Enacted By The People Of California “Whereas Our present system of government renders it difficult for business men to carry on their operations through our county; We do therefore resolve that a proper channel be provided for trade and intercourse between our citizens and those from other parts of the United States; Now therefore we decree That said channels be known as Merchant's Channel or simply First Street." It took until 1870 before some permanent buildings became operational such as the first post office at 730 E First Street which served until 1893 When Territorial Governor Manuel Nieto ordered construction begin on what would become State Capitol Complex including its original grandstand across plaza from current Municipal Hall (). Construction continued until 1887 when local taxpayers paid for its replacement with handsome red brick courthouse at 400 Sutter Street. The city of Benicia was founded in 1847 by Captain George Hayward and his wife, Eliza. The first post office in the city was established in 1849. The City of Benicia was incorporated on July 1, 1872.
