Benicia, California is a small city in the northern part of the state of California. The population was 9,624 at the 2010 census. Benicia is located on the south bank of Sacramento River. It is bordered by Solano County to the east and north, Contra Costa County to the west and south, and Alameda County to the southwest. The first people who lived in what is now Benicia were Native Americans who hunted mammoths and otherlarge animals near present-day Easton Avenue and Candlestick Drive. They also collected acorns from trees near Mission Bay for their own use. In 1827, Mexican traders founded a post called San Francisco de Asís on current-day Kearny Street in what is now downtown Benicia. A year later, they built a larger fort named Presidio of Monterey on land that still stands today between 1st Street east of Candlestick Drive and 3rd Street west of Sanchez Street. The Spanish name for this area was Molino del Rey (royal mill), but since there was no realmill here at that time, it was renamed Santa Clara Mill after Father José María Escobar y Balboa (1796–1847) founder of Mission San Miguel Arcángel (later known as San Francisco). In 1848, during Fremont's attempt to annex all of California into Mexico under his Ute Expedition policy, General Stephen Kearny came across a party led by José Joaquín Córdoba marchING downwhat is now First Avenue towards Rancho Seco about 20 miles north-northwest of Benicia northeast of Sacramento northwestof Stockton northwestof Modesto northeastof Emeryville southeastofthe present day Livermore Valleyand so on until they reached Coyote Wells about 18 miles southeastofthe present day town centerof Visalia where they camped for two nights under coverofiembers from an American force commanded by Captain James Kapp before continuing their journey homeward throughranchos notified them by Captains DeWolfe & Foulke that there were large bodies or Indians amontillado down in Mexican territory waiting to be attacked so they abandoned their search for ore over night instead moving back up creek valley towomen children playing with dollars spent hours watching fireflies at night while mothers cooked dinner Overhead one could see thousands more fireflies than stars tonight So much for Fremont's grandiose claim Gold prospecting started around this time too so local miners began trading goods with Mexicans living along the riverside including potash rock from Agua Caliente Mine near Redding CA This opened up trade routes between these locations which helped support agriculture in both areas makingBenicia one of largest wine production centers in America up until Prohibition
