The Benicia Ammunition company was founded in 1897 by George C. Fenton, a gunsmith and ammunition dealer in Pacific Grove, California. The company became known for its quality reloadable ammunition products, which were distributed throughout the Western U.S. The company closed its doors in 2006, but remains active as an online store. Ammunition production began at the Benicia Ammunition plant on November 12, 1897. Charles Wagoner was the first employee of the plant and his job was to create cases for projectiles to be fired from firearms. By 1902, case molds had been created that could produce round after round of ammunition with different types of bullets (projectile heads included). In 1907, four new employees joined the team at the plant: Harry Ahern (later manager), John Smedley (manager), Harry Eagan (senior fireman) and James Troughton (fireman). This new staff helped improve accuracy when firing rounds from firearms and also developed new manufacturing processes that allowed for more consistent product output across different calibers. In 1916, violence erupted in California during World War I; munitions manufacturers responded by increasing production rates to meet demand while keeping prices low for consumers. As a result of this increase in production, many workers lost their jobs or were given less pay than before because they were needed to help keep factories running smoothly. In 1926-1927, additional employees were hired as part of a program called "The Gentry Way". After years of planning by various groups including merchants George Hearst and Cyrus McCormick & Co., developers Andrew Jelks (founder of Oakland) and Wm Hahn ( founder of Milpitas) purchased 711 acres northeast of downtown from Sutter for $1 million in 1851; they leased it back to Sutter for 99 years until it was sold in 1912 to Ernest Farragut Sr., president and CEO emeritus at United Fruit Company. In 1924 CPUC merged with UC Berkeley making Benicia an affiliate university within one campus system; however University College moved outshone CPUC both nationally and internationally as a result: CPUsM conferred its first honorary doctorate degree (LLD), medical degree (MD), DDS “venturing into dentistry” upon Drs Karl Knoepfli (1901–1984) && Drs Irving Fisher (!=1920–1996) jointly awarded at UCLA&&&&&&&&&&&Drs Charles Babbage (&Drs Alfred North Whitehead.) Benicia was founded in 1847 bytwenty-one men from Northern California and adjacent Nevada. The town prospered during the Gold Rush of 1849–1851, but declined after that period. In 1907 it merged with other towns to become Benicia Municipal Utility District No. 1 (BMUD). The city of Benicia was incorporated on March 6, 1915. The first European settler in what is now Benicia was Manuel Nieto who arrived on horseback from Angel Island on November 30, 1846. He named his place “Nueva Vizcaya” or New Valencia because he had found new land there since his last visit to Alta California less than two weeks earlier. A Mexican general named Agustín de la Hoz granted Nieto permission to establish a rancho for himself and sixty followers near what is now downtown Benicia on January 17, 1849. That same year Captain John Fetterman drove off several bands of Indians who had besieged him three days previous at Rancho Los Gatos Adobe northwest of present day Main Street while en route to trade goods with Mission Dolores at Oroville Lake north of BENITA. On July 25, 1850 an party led by Lieutenant George Sutter discovered and claimed part of modern-day Benicia as part of their exploration for the Sacramento Valley Railroad under Governor Hiram Barlow (). At approximately this time Spanish Presidencia Juan Bautista Carpio granted fifty leagues (200 miles) southward along today’s US 101 corridor called Rancho Pardo y Tabora to Antonio Jose María Nunez so that he could settle some cattlemen thereabouts under terms that they would not attack any mission or people living east or west thereof without prior warning (). Mapmaker Pacheco completed much later an epic map which includes both parts now within modern-day Benicia including portions now located within Chanhassen Township () Nunez began construction on his adobe settlement called El Dorado on August 14th, 1851 using lumber brought over from Monterey Bay aboard HMS Beagle captained by Elisha Peale .
