This purchase marked the beginning of Winchester Weaponry’s participation in World War II military production efforts. However, manufacturing declined during the late 1960s and 1970s as new businesses moved into more urban areas; Belmont's unemployment rate peaked at 11 percent in 1979 before declining gradually over ensuing decades to 6 percent today. The city's economy has since recovered somewhat thanks to tourism (mainly golf courses) and light industrial development along Interstate 5; however, some signs remain that Belmont may still struggle economically compared with other large metropolitan areas in Southern California.
