Belmont, California is a small city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 26,005 at the 2010 census. In the early 1800s, Belmont was a small town on the edge of San Francisco. It thrived because it was an important stop on Stagecoach Road and because its citizens were responsible for managing local resources and ensuring that goods reached Market Street. In 1853, entrepreneur and mayor of Belmont George Jones donated land to create what would become Stanford University. The university began classes in 1854 and soon became one of America's leading educational institutions. In 1868, Jones donated another piece of land to create Stanford Junior College which served as a preparatory school for Stanford students who would attend college. The city of Belmont grew steadily during the late 19th century due to its importance as a transportation hub for goods moving between San Francisco and other parts of Northern California. By 1910, Belmont had over 30 businesses with more than 500 employees and was home to over 100 residents. During World War II, Belmont played an important role in supplying munitions to the war effort by manufacturing military supplies such as ammunition drums and cannons from recycled materials

Today,Belmont continues to experience steady population growth with more than 50% growth between 2000 and 2010 alone. In 2016, Belmont became one of twelve cities across California that joined forces with Oakland in order to form the "City of Bay Area" through Mayor Libby Schaaf’s effort known as “The GreatOakland merger." This merger provides increased economic opportunity for both cities while also strengthening community bonds within each locality
