Belmont is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Francisco's East Bay region. Belmont was founded by Mexicans in 1844 as Villa Belmonte de las Flores. The town became a port of entry for migrants coming to the American West and by 1860 had a population of over 100 people. In 1881, when the state of California granted autonomy to the towns within Contra Costa County, Villa Belmonte became part of Belmont and it retained its name until 1955 when it reverted to Villa Belmonte de las Flores. In 1865, John Dolan opened his first flour mill in what is now downtown Belmont and this led to settlement around Dolan's mill site by Irish-American businessmen and their families from Solano County. By 1871 there were 10 businesses located along Third Street between Market and State Streets; six of these were occupied continuously through 1915 when production moved to new facilities on First Street east of Center Street which led to the current downtown area that includes many small shops clustered around First Street corner blocks on three sides (northwest - northeast - southeast). In 1870 two railroadroads crossed through town: one ran north-south through town center on Market Street while another ran parallel across Third Street just south of Center street before terminating at Alameda Creek south of town (the tracks are still visible today near intersection of First and Second streets). This railroad connection allowed goods transportation to be important throughout much of the early history ofbelmont until Via Rail arrived in 1919 with its own line running directly northwest from El Sobrante into Downtown San Francisco

There have been numerous events leading up to major earthquakes such as devastating fires that burned throughout parts of town shortly following an epicenter quake; however these have largely resulted in very minor damage... One notable exception occurred when school buses service arrived late one night due directly following a magnitude 5.5 earthquake offshore that destroyed entire neighborhoods just feet away... Although earthquakes do cause occasional streetlights and power outages lasting several hours or longer,... most problems arise because people tend not to use common sense when traveling through dangerous areas after dark......... Prior Chinook winds blew across interior valleys blowing sandblasts called dune easters which deposited large amounts sandbags along creek banks causing flash flooding"... according as per information collected from volunteers surveying streets impacted by floods waters rose quickly reaching high points above trees line creating multiple breaches channeling runoff into streets" In 1916–17 local citizens built what would later become known as "The Roundabout" which still stands today cornering 3rd Street between Manchester Avenue and Highland Avenue North.... At Burrard Inlet they constructed Park Pier extending down river into Hagadahbay National Monument..... After WWI they used funds raised by lottery sales for improvements including new sewer lines,,,,,,Original Post Office building remains serving community until replaced by new structure built 2007

Some of the more notable landmarks located in or around Belmont include: The Frederick Sibley House (1888), which is now used as a museum; Manor House (1915), now a bed-and-breakfast; Garrison High School (1915-present); and John Fenton Elementary School (1982).
