This fortification became known as Dewey Heights because General John J. Pershing used it to launch his attacks on bandit camps along the Diablo Range during World War I (1914-1918). The city changed its name to Belmont in 1919 after Mayor Harry Waugh suggested using "a beautiful word" such as "mountain" or "vista" instead of "town." At that time, there were only about 200 people living in Belmont proper and it consisted mostly of farms surrounding downtown. However, rapid growth occurred throughout the 1920s and 1930s thanks to Interstate 10 which connected Los Angeles with San Bernardino County; businesses sprang up all over town due to this new roadway; automobiles became popular;and more people started moving into town from outlying areas such as Riverside and Pomona counties. During this time period also saw significant construction projects undertaken such as construction of Stonington High School (now USC) which opened in 1927; development around Pico Boulevard which led directly to today's downtown area;the opening of City Hall which replaced an old courthouse dating back to 1868; additions to both Notre Dame Cathedral (now Cathedral Basilica de la Raza) and Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church (now Our Lady Of Loreto Chapel) including a library/parish hall/ gymnasium/ movie theater complex;the erection of numerous large homes especially along Pico Boulevard between University Drive and College Ave.; remodeling/updating many Downtown business establishments including restaurants/bars/cafes etc.; expansion into adjacent areas including northeast corner lot formerly occupied by Donnybrook Racecourse where later Live Oak Golf Club & Country Club would be established;and finally complete annexation by Pasadena effective January 1st 1953 despite protests from some citizens who felt their town would not be merged without their vote!
