Belmont is a small town in the eastern Mojave Desert of California, about 30 miles east of Las Vegas. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Belmont were Spanish traders and missionaries who came in 1821-24. A post office called "Belmont" was established in 1848, and it remained in operation until 1959. During that time, the town's only store was a general store on First Street. In 1955, Belmont joined the newly formed Unified School District #3. The first high school in Belmont graduated its students in 1957; however, it closed three years later due to budget cuts by then-District Superintendent Don Griffiths (who later became Nevada Governor). In 1960, following a campaign pledge by then-Governor John Ensign (R), Griffiths reopened belmont High School as an all-girls institution with help from local businessman Jack Garvey and other donors. In 1964–65, while still part of Unified School District #3, Belmont hosted one of the world's largest cross country running events when more than 1 million people participated from over 100 countries including 2 U.S., Canada and Mexico champions as well as over 100 World Championship winners including America's greatest Olympians such as Jesse Owens and Steve Prefontaine Belmonte also became home to one of California's original air conditioning plants during this time with improvements made beginning in 1967 which continued until 1984 when it was replaced by an energy efficient modern plant . In 2002–2003 Regency Elementary School moved into its new building across from KFC after spending $8 million on renovations which included installation of an environmentally friendly roof system and window coverings made even more green via solar heating for classrooms during summer months; this project followed recommendations made by then-Superintendent Dan D’Angelo who felt that Regency had become too developed for traditional elementary schools within our community .
