By 1880, most of the mined gold had been processed and shipped back east to be used up or melted down into coins or other valuable assets; only about 1 percent remained underground as creek beds or hillside workings scattered among oak woodland near Sutter's Mill today. To make room for new mines, many people abandoned their homes around Belmont during this period – including some who still live there today (e.g., Harry Whitehurst). Belmont was founded by Captain George Stephenson and his wife Lydia on October 10, 1849 as a small post office on Rancho Cucamonga Creek west of present-day Belmont Village. In 1850, it became an agricultural community with seven adobe buildings and a single wagon road to commute to work in neighboring Riverside County. The first post office closed in 1854 after only three months because of low mail volume from residents travelling to see their friends and family in nearby cities such as Los Angeles and Riverside. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Edmund Kirby Smith's army passed through Belmont on its way northward from Sacramento along stagescooped roads that followed whatever creek bed could be reached; so much for small towns being able to stay out of war. At that time there were few homes or businesses within easy range of military encampments so most people turned against secessionists and sided with the Union cause. In 1865, when General Grant invaded northern California he called upon all Californians who would support him to come south and fight against Confederate forces under Jefferson Davis; many did but very few living in central or southern California answered Grant's call coming down into what are now known as Orange County (and parts of Riverside County) because they thought no one would leave their homes without good reason. Consequently most people who did answer Grant's call lived near larger populated areas such as Pasadena or Victorville where they could easily get food and supplies while fighting rebels instead of having to trek miles away each day like those living incentral California had to do. This event led directly to the creation of chaparral parkland east of downtown Belmont which today makes up much of eastern San Bernardino County including portions of Redlands and Ontario City
