In the early 1900s, Belmont was a small town in central California. It had a population of about 100 people and was known for its fruit orchards. The Orchard District was located on the north side of town near the railroad tracks. In 1907, John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in Cleveland, Ohio. He moved his business to New York City and renamed it Rockefeller Standard Oil Company. In 1912, Rockefeller decided to establish a refinery in California so that he could produce gasoline there instead of shipping it all over the country. He bought land in Belmont and built a refinery there. The first gasoline produced at the new refinery was sold to customers in 1914. The Belmont Refinery became one of the world's largest producers of gasoline until World War II when it was supplanted by the Chevron Corporation in San Francisco Bay Area production capacity.

It lies within the East Bay Municipal District and is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population density was 7,362 people per square mile (2,971/km²).

Belmont is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The original Belmont Adobe and Ranch house are two of only four remaining buildings from the early days of Northern California's farming region. Belmont was originally called "Granada" by Spanish missionaries who founded Mission San Gabriel in 1821. In 1828, the Mexican government granted land to prospectors named George Cushman and James Purdy for a maximum of 20 acres (8 ha). In 1847, Elisha Beechey established an adobe mission here with 12 farm animals. From its earliest days as a settlement, Belmont was known for its fertile soil and fine water resources. One early resident, Gideon Welles (1802-87), developed a well-known fruit orchard that yielded some of the world's first export crops: figs and grapes were grown here in the late 19th century. The town was incorporated on December 12, 1850, under the name Granada Vieja de Palma de la Sierra by citizens of nearby Palmdale who had been forced out of their homes during Mexico's Reform Era. After years of development by local organizations such as the Granaderos Padres there were no new arrivals until after World War II when residents began to fleeurban sprawl across Northern California due to air quality concerns During World War II many people came to work at Los Angeles Naval Shipyard on Terminal Island which developed into one of Southern California’s most vibrant industrial areas; although much has changed since then outside constraints have prevailed: industry now occupies little more than an enclave on an old military base surrounded by housing developments scoured clean for shipbuilding machinery
