Belmont is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 16,623 at the 2010 census. Belmont is located on the eastern edge of Stockton and is bordered by Ceres to the south and east, North Stockton to the north and west, and Turlock to the northwest. The first European settlers in what would become Belmont were two brothers from England who named their land after a horse they had seen grazing in their garden. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking their property and started farming hay, oats, potatoes, corn and watermelons. In 1847 they sold their land to Capt. George Hearst for $10 per acre. Captain Hearst founded the newspaper company that would later be called Hearst Communications Corporation which included newspapers such as The Californian (1848), The Sacramento Union (1850), The Fresno Bee (1859) and The San Francisco Examiner (1863). In 1868 Capt. John Waddell purchased some of Capt. George Hearst's property including parts of what became Belmont from him for $35 per acre ($ today). Waddell began ranching with his brother-in-law Chauncey Mullenbach and soon developed an irrigation system that produced crops such as grapes, apples, pears trees fruit trees orchards etc., besides making wine from rediscovered grapevines he found near Ensenada de la Luna.. He also donated 1/4 acre (.25 acres) of his land each year to help support local charities until he died in 1904 at age 82 years old.. His son Harry Waddell continued ranching until 1923 when he sold his holdings to Charles Earle Benson who organized Rancho Santa Anita racetrack which became one of California's leading racing tracks.. In 1926 Benson donated all remaining lands in Belmont including over 6 miles (10 kilometers) of track to Caltech where it currently operates as part of Redlands Polytechnic Institute . It wasn't until 1886 when William Mulholland bought some land adjacent to present day Belmont High School where he began developing dairy cattle operations . He named his farm "Belmont" after then-President James Kahl during an interview about agricultural production techniques with Rodeo Drive Journal reporter Hilda Jaffe , now known as " Aunt Hilda ". After making several thousand dollars off this operation he decided not to keep it going but sold it back to Mulholland family members in 1907 for $22 per acre ($ today). It wasn't until 1916 when Clarence Kelley Sr., another resident of nearby Ceres bought 5 acres next door along with building supplies used by other farmers for 3 years before being destroyed by a fire due unknown accident while tenant housing was being erected nearby; this left open space on that side of town where development has occurred ever since.–Benson family history
