A group led by George Vancouver explored this possibility in 1777 and arrived at what is now Point Reyes Station onshore near today's Crissy Field before sailing back upriver for fear that they had discovered Terra Nova or another island colony by mistake. They named it Vancouver Island after Admiral George Vancouver who had commanded them during their explorations; he returned later that year with news that his party had found land rather than an island colony.) In 1847, John Cranch began construction on a road called "Cranberry Way" which would connect Stockton with Simi Valley before reaching Fairfield—northwest of nearby Redwood City—in 1850.* In 1853, California statehood was granted following the Mexican War; Belmont became part of Contra Costa County as part of the new state.* By 1860, over 20 businesses controlled more than 60% of all trade within Contra Costa County*††††‡*.
