Belmont in 1887 as a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The name comes from a nearby mountain range called the Monterey Mountains which offer beautiful views of downtown Bakersfield and other parts of Kern County. In 1905, John's son Charles W Belmont took over running the station and began to develop it into what it is today - an agricultural center with a large market place that still features weekly sales of local produce and meat products. Today, Belmont is known for its many prestigious institutions such as University of California-Bakersfield (UCB), Dole Food Company, and Kern Community College (KCCC). These businesses have helped contribute to the town's economic stability and growth over the years. Additionally, Belmont has become well-known for its annual horse racing event which attracts some of America's most affluent spectators.

Belmont, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Porterville Combined Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Belmont was made by Kit Carson and his party on July 20, 1849. They built a cabin on an east-west trail that led from Ukiah to Tulare County. On December 7, 1851, they sold the land to John Sutter for $5 per acre. He named the settlement after General Anthony Wayne who fought in the Mexican-American War and became governor of Alta California under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1874, Jeptha Cooke developed a large salt mine near Belmont and began extractting salt from the local Abalone Coast Formation which had been mined since prehistoric times. In 1886 he merged with three other companies to form United States Salt Company which continued extracting salt until 1912 when it merged with Canadian National Railway company to become Canadian National Railways (CNR). In 1916, after World War I ended, the US military withdrew from Alta California and management of CNR passed from NEDCO to UP Standard Oil Co., Inc.. service operations were discontinued in 1923 but freight traffic continued until 1951 when CSX Transportation took over all operations except for maintenance; passenger trains stopped running between Bakersfield and Sacramento on October 15, 1951 Amtrak took over operation of both routes providing service through Lane Gate Station until May 6th 1969 when those services were transferred to Union Pacific Railroad's Central Valley Corridor route serving Stockton just south of Humboldt Bay Estuary where they continue today as Amtrak's Empire Builder trains operating out of Stockton Terminal 3
Belmont was founded in 1887 by Charles Belmont, a horse breeder and racecar constructor. The town is located on the eastern side of San Bernardino County, about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is now a sparsely populated village with a population of just over 100. Belmont's first municipal buildings were built in 1888, and the first post office opened in 1889. The first school was established in 1890 and the first doctor was appointed in 1896. The town quickly became known for its horses and racing activities, which led to it becoming an important center for horse breeding and racing in California. In 1911, Belmont incorporated as a city. In the early 1960s, Belmont experienced some significant changes when its Mayor Harvey Milk became involved with the gay rights movement. He was assassinated soon after, however, leaving his influential role at the city hall relatively unscathed. In 2002, Belmont merged with neighboring Riverside to form what is now Riverside-Belmont City Unified School District
