Belmont was founded as a small agricultural community on May 15, 1875, when three men from Ontario, Canada, named John Davenport, George A. Smith, and James Hogg set out to farm land that had been purchased by Daniel Boone about 20 miles south of present-day Belmont. The town site was chosen because of its commanding location overlooking the Santa Ana River Valley and its ability to offer good grazing for cattle. In 1887, the town fathers erected a blockhouse and built a few sod houses. The first post office was established in 1887 with J.D. Hartman as address; it closed in 1912 due to low postal traffic. From 1889 until 1912 there were only three mail carriers serving the town: Wm Senter at his home over the road from downtown; Wm Girdler at his shop next door; and Cushman Hastings’ stagecoach service between San Diego City Hall (west of downtown) and Lancaster Station (northwest of Belmont). In 1902/3 an Improvement Association was formed to improve water irrigation systems around the town site; this association remains active today as part of the Friends Committee on Human Resources in Belmont-Canyon Hills Unified School District #1

The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. The name "Belmont" comes from a grant given by Governor George De Forest to James Belknap (1787-1850), an American Revolutionary War veteran and fur trader who had settled there in 1839. The grant also included land for a school and church. In 1871, when the town site was designated as part of Alameda County, it became one of the first places in California to be served by water supply through public works projects such as an aqueduct and system of canals. The community grew rapidly after railroad construction reached it in the 1870s; by 1888, Belmont had over 100 businesses. The railroads brought people and their goods into Belmont; many residents still live here today because they are connected to local services or because they own property within walking distance of their homes. In 1916, two groups led by Ira Millikan organized what would become known as the Belmont Improvement Association (BIA). Their goal was to preserve old buildings and improve infrastructure in order to promote growth throughout Alameda County while increasing access to education, shopping opportunities, health care services, jobs and other amenities for all citizens. In 1950 BIA members moved into new headquarters at 5555 Laney Ave., now part of Google’s Campus USA neighborhood
