Bellflower, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Tujumbia metropolitan area. The name "Bellflower" comes from the local wildflowers that are found in and around the town. These flowers are called belladonnaes because they have purple or pink flowers that look like heart-shaped bells. The name also comes from the fact that these flowers can be found near roads and passing by cars on their way to and from farmers markets. Bellflower started as a small farming community in 1897 when two brothers, Sam and Chas Hinton, founded a farm about six miles north of Bellflower on Highway 395. The land around present-day Bellflower was first leased from Mexican landowners by brothers Hinton in 1872 for grazing sheep and cattle. By 1877, Sam had built a cabin on what is now his farmstead; this became the nucleus of what would become Bellflower. In 1898, three other men—Jimmie Kerr (a postman), John Shaffer (an agricultural labourer) and Charles Shearer (a cottonseed merchant)—joined Hinton on the farm’s initial acreage of . By 1900, all but one mile of current U.S.-Ranch Road were within sight of present-day Bellflower as it connected with old Ranch Road 10 northeast of today’s town limits through an open cut which has been filled in several times over time: mostly during World War II military exercises to minimize sniper potential along highway routes…. As early as 1907 there were reports of [belladonnaes] blooming nearpresent day Highway 395…In 1908[Sam] Hinton erected a pole at his home marked “Bloomeria Hall” which served as an annual show ground for exhibitors selling fresh belladonnaes collected from various parts of Kern County….By 1910Hinton had added another 100 acres to his holdings adjacent to Bloomeria Hall; this included what is now Moorpark….In 1916[Charles Shearer], general manager for United States Rubber Company lands beyond Bloomeria Hall sold off additional land including much still remaining south east today abutting present day UPRR property line….. Between 1916-1917 Charles Shearer donated 5 acres southeast corner Bluff Rd., just southwestof present day Moorpark Rd., parcel number 110918] to help support local education through providing teacher training facilities….. After retiring from United States Rubber Company he donated another 3 acres southeast corner Bliss Rd., just southwestofpresent day Moorpark Rd., parcel number 111016] also towards supporting local education….. Today most if not all commercial activity takes place along US-Ranch Road (formerly Ranch Road 10) between Bloomeria Halls Boulevard & Moorpark Blvd.. There are some residential areas scattered throughout town but majority concentrate around main business district downtown/Moorpark Blvd.. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Mono County to the south and east, Kern County to the north and west, and Tulare County to the northwest. The community began as two posts on what is now milepost 8 of U.S. Route 90 in 1875. One post had been established about a mile from where Bellflower currently stands; however, it was not until 1888 when both posts were moved together about a half-mile northeast of their present location due to water shortages caused by continued farming in what is now Mono Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The first post office was opened in 1889 by Wm H. French with Payson as his mailing address; however, this office closed in 1893 because of lack of customers. The first postmaster was A.C.
