Bellflower, California was founded on October 10, 1853 by George W. Bell and his wife Lucy A. Bell. It is located in Kern County, California. The city has a population of over 100,000 people as of 2019. The town was named after the bellflower which grows abundantly in the area. In 1863, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at the junction of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers in what is now Fresno County. He named his new fort for General James Hurlbut who had helped him expel the Mission Indians from California in 1851-52. In 1881, William Hammond erected a large frame building on what is now downtown Bellflower to serve as a post office and store. The first telephone line was installed here in 1912 by Southern Pacific Railway Company president Arthur Ransom Callaham with assistance from City Clerk Harry Junker and engineer Willis Gorman. During World War II, Bellflower became one of several sites where plutonium production took place at Los Alamos National Laboratory near Albuquerque NM under Project Plutonium. After the war ended, many properties were donated to the city for use as parkland or other community uses such as social housing developments that continue today
Bellflower is a city in Orange County, California, United States. It was the second-most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. The population of the City of Bellflower was 131,545 at the 2010 census. The town of Bellflower began as an agricultural community in 1873 on land that was donated by Thomas Edison to start a new township. The name "Bellflower" first appeared on maps in 1887 and may have been chosen because it rhymes with "flowers." In 1907, the original post office opened and served the town of Bellflower until 1914 when it became part of Anaheim. In 1916, two brothers named Harry and Alanson Whelan bought 640 acres (27 km2) east ofbellflower from Jepson family for $2,000. They dedicated their land to public use and built what is now called Whelan Park which includes a lakeside swimming pool, tennis courts, playgrounds, a gymnasium/fitness center and a belltower used as a public address system. The park also contains two small streams which ran through it before being diverted into channels to create Lake View Drive. In 1967, developers approached Mayor Bob Filner about building an apartment complex on the site but he declined because he wanted to keep the area for local farms and businesses instead. In 2003–2004 developer Jerry Brown purchased 1 acre (0.40 km²) adjacent to Whelan Park from Alanson Whelan for $10 million Brown's plan included demolishing most of Whelan Park; creating parking for 100 cars next to his company headquarters; expanding Interstate 5 across Route 44 betweenWhelan Park and downtown; redesigning major streetscape; adding new buildings including three high-rise apartments; replacing more than 80% of existing trees with artificial plants.;[1] however no action took place during those 3 years.[2] In 2006–2007 Brown announced his intent to develop Belmont Triangle which would include 400 units near I-5exit toward Downtown freeway exit Rd., 125 jobsites within 2 miles (3 km), rapid transit service running along I-5 Exit & SR 244 eastward intoBelmont Village
