Sapphire became one of the most popular models among collectors due to its unique design and beautiful finish. It was founded by George and Margaret Bell in 1872 as a small farming community on the Kern River. After years of growth and development, Bellflower became an incorporated city in 1959. The original name for the town was Dominguezville but it changed to Bellflower because of its location near two major watercourses: the Kern River and the San Joaquin River. The first post office opened in 1872 and served residents of nearby Bakersfield until 1907 when it moved to Placerita. The main industries of early Bellflowers were agriculture (mainly raising chickens) and tourism which included visiting dairy farms upstream or downstream from town along the Kern River. However, by the late 1800s industry had become more important with steel production beginning around 1900 and general merchandise becoming increasingly popular after World War I. In 1959, due to growing Census Bureau Population Estimates for Kern County that showed an increasing Hispanic population, incorporation into city status became an option for Bellflower voters; under City Charter section 6-105(a), incorporation may be granted if "the municipal government demonstrates that its operations are consistent with those traditionally associated with cities." Incorporation later occurred through annexation of smaller communities located within adjacent unincorporated areas east of Highway 395 including Sunnyside Heights (1962), Paradise Valley (1963), Cathedral City (1965), Storey Canyon (1966) and Happy Valley (1967). It is now one of Southern California's largest cities with over 1 million people living inside its borders!

It is part of the Pomona-Arroyo Grande Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded on December 21, 1887 by Dr. George Wirt and his wife Fannie Dent as a small community of six houses on a small farmstead east of Arroyo Grande Boulevard in what is now eastern Pasadena. The town quickly became an agricultural center with an annual production of fruits and vegetables that supported many people and businesses. In 1915, Bellflower became one of several communities to be incorporated under California law as a "municipality." This gave residents some form of local government and increased their ability to advocate for their needs within the larger community. In 1955, the name change to Bellflower after Dorthy Belle Boyd (1910-2001), founder and first female mayor of Pasadena. Mayor Boyd led city officials through negotiations for annexation byMontebello which would have doubled its size but failed due to opposition from other municipalities in southern California including Maywood, Monterrey and Lancaster City which were all established at this time with large populations than Pasadena proper. The annexation effort did succeed in gaining control over much land east side Of Arroyo Grande Boulevard including present day Bellflower village site - giving new life to the defunct farming operation; which continues today as a family-owned farmstead
