In 1916, the city built an 8x24ft steelTarget on Fulton Avenue east of Sixth Street for $2,500 which remained operational until it was destroyed by fire in 1959. It is believed that this particular target was designed by Edward Jenssen of Sacramento and became known as "Bellflower's" Steel Target because it resembled much of what later became common throughout Southern California (e.g., Exposition Park). In 1950s and 1960s, local gun clubs would often hold annual tournaments using different types of targets including paper pistol targets (similar to present day airsoft guns) as well as metal shot baskets which could be killed with just one round from a rifle or shotgun while standing still - making them ideal candidates for team matches or individual competitions where scores were recorded among participants over time! The town was founded in 1907 by settlers from the Bellflower area of Los Angeles. The name comes from a type of wildflowers that grew abundantly in the area: belladonna and dianthus. In 1916, postmaster George Clements granted land to the town for a public school and playground. In 1957, Bellflower incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of Kern County. The city changed its name to Bellflower in 1990 after residents voted to change it because they felt it gave them better exposure outside of Kern County's larger cities such as Bakersfield and Chico. Today, most people in Bellflower work within the larger cities or surrounding farming communities; however, there are still some areas where agriculture is important but limited economic development exists due to natural resources or distance from more populous places. There are also several small businesses dotting the village center which provide services such as auto repair shops and grocery stores not found elsewhere within town limits. Settlers who arrived along what is now Highway 395 Estes Road during this time period brought various plants with them that would be used for their new home: grape vines were brought over by wagonloads while onions were taken on horses and then planting directly into moist dirt hills near what is now Fourth Street; tomatoes were plant up on hilltops while other vegetables like beans and corn were grown closer to watercourses so they could be dried out before being eaten (later this process was done using an oven). All these new arrivals contributed greatly to early growth of what would eventually become Bellflower!
