Bellflower, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1887 by Jedediah Smith and his wife Lucy as a trading post on the San Andreas Fault. The name of the town comes from a wild flower that grew abundantly here, the bellflower. The post office at Bellflower opened on October 22, 1887. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bellflower was J.H. Goodspeed who built his cabin on the north side of the fault in 1889 and named it after himself, "Goodspeed's Gulch". In 1890 Enoch Pratt established an adobe school west of town which he named after himself and his son Moses Pratt (1827-1910). In 1888 when General Grant made his famous visit to Bear Valley Ranch he stopped at Bellflower for water and minerals before continuing his journey up the mountain towards Mount Whitney. During this trip he was accompanied by Captains John Teller (1847-1925) and George Armstrong Custer (1863-1937). After Grant's visit many prospectors came to search for gold along the San Andreas Fault including Wm Henson (1822-1900), Charles Eames (1828-1900), James Wittell(1793-1878) and others. Some of these men built their homes near today’s intersection of Main Street/Milpas Road and Redwood Road known as “The Grapes” or “Doris Place”.
