Bellflower is a small town located in central California, United States. It was founded in 1874 by the Bell family and has been inhabited since then. The bellflower is a type of flowers that are native to California and its many hills. The town sprang up around the post office, which was built in 1878 on the site of an old mill. Today, most of the buildings in Bellflower date back to before World War II. The first settler in what is now Bellflower was Jethro Meeks, who arrived there from New York City in 1847. He named his place after his friend and mentor Elijah Bellew, who had also settled near San Bernardino County seat Atwater during the same year. In 1850, John Ayer surveyed and landed at what is now Bellew Point on behalf of George Condon, Surveyor General for Northern Californias under Governor Manuel Michelini. On May 2nd of that year, Ayer claimed land comprising present-day Bellflower along with present-day Riverside (now Moreno Valley) and Pico Rivera (now Pomona). In 1875, Isaac Aspinwall purchased property within present day Bellew Point from Jethro Meeks for $8 per acre. The following year he erected a log post office adjacent to his farmstead at the junction of State Route 24 and Indian Creek Road (later becoming State Route 245). By 1880 Postmaster Isaac Aspinwall had replaced the original gristmill with a larger design which stood until 1945 when it was destroyed by fire A second log post office operated from 1886 to 1890 at an address currently occupied by Mrs. Lillian Weisman’s home on Old Pismo Rd., just east of SR 245 south of Millbrae Blvd., across from Biltmore Golf Course A thirdlog post office operated between 1893-1895 at 4200 block FM 527 about 3 miles northwest of modern day Bellflower off SR 245 north of Santa Teresa Ave . This lastoffice served as the only one operational through WWI due to construction being done on nearby military airfields . In 1919 Isaac Aspinwall donated land forming today’s corner lot next to chuckwagon restaurant for school purposes . In reply to US Postmasters request for nominations for their “Outstanding Citizen Award” given annually by local government leaders throughout Southern California Aspinwall received two votes .....but no award was given
