Bellflower is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 30,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The city was named for American politician Daniel Webster Bell and his wife Nellie Gwynn Bell. Bellflower was platted on February 12, 1887 by Luther Rice and Wm. H. Thornton from land given to them by Catherine Helen Rucker; it became a town on November 16, 1907. The original name of the town may have been "Bellevue" after Territorial Governor James Mott Bellevue (1803-1875). The townsite changed its name to "Bellflower" on October 20, 1912 when the US Post Office moved to bellflower from Enterprise which had been their initial site choice because of its strategic location at an intersection of three major roads - Stagecoach Road (now I-5), State Route 5 and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now Interstate 10). For many years both Enterprise and Bellflower were served by one post office - until 1917 when they both became separate cities with their own post offices. In 1931, they merged again into one city with their present form. In 1932, two brothers – Harry Kapp and Julius Kapp – founded the first commercial grocery store in what is now downtown Bellflower - Kapp's Grocery Company Ltd., which remains a prominent business in town today. A year later Harry Kapp married Edna Cottonwood who ran her own store next door at 625 W 3rd Street until she died in 1951; he continued the operation under his brother's ownership until 1955 when it closed down due to financial difficulties sustained during World War II when goods produced in occupied Germany were embargoed by Congress due to German wartime production materials being exported without appropriate markings or licensing! In 1957 Harry Kapp donated all assets including the building to community members for use as a public library while he retains full title to property through civic status since he never sold any part of it back to private hands! Harry Kapp passed away in 1966 but his heirs maintained ownership over the business until 1978 when it finally went out of business due largely to increased competition from larger supermarkets within metropolitan areas! It reopened under new management in 1984 before closing again in early 1995 amidst more problems brought on by changes in local economic conditions following NAFTA!!! In late 1997 City Manager Donny Oldham convinced Citizens' Committee formed pursuant thereto that physical conversion of existing brick buildings inside former Sam's Club warehouse onto two levels would provide much needed additional housing for approximately 100 low income families newly displaced from elsewhere within our community ensuing from extensive fire damage caused thereby during Loma Prieta Earthquake!!!!!! Overwhelmingly support was obtained from residents resulting ultimately in conversion project becoming reality!!!!! After 15 years closure finally Bellflower has long term success =)

It is located about 28 miles (45 km) east of Bakersfield and 21 miles (33 km) northwest of Stockton. The history of Bellflower can be traced back to 1868 when gold was discovered in the area. Goldmining operations began in 1869 and continued until 1880; however, the gold rush failed to materialize and no significant settlements were established. In 1892, a post office was established at Bellflower by Wm Halsey Searles; it remained in operation until 1912. In 1907, the first telephone service in Kern County was installed in Bellflower; this service was provided by Westinghouse Electric Company. The town became an incorporated municipality on December 5, 1913. From 1916 through 1922, Bellflower served as the capital of Kern County; however, due to political instability in that county, it has not been held as an official county seat since then. In 1932–1933 a severe drought affected much of California; accordingly, most businesses closed their doors throughout much of Kern County during that period. A large number of people relocated to other parts of California during that time- including Bellflower which saw its population grow from 1,395 at the 1920 census to 3,531 by 1930. During World War II many residents worked for Los Angeles Defense Army Camps located nearby on Mount Wilson Boulevard; these residents were later absorbed into city services when those camps closed down approximately 1945. After World War II many dwellings were replaced with new buildings such as schools and clinics while others were demolished or left abandoned due to lack of use or finances). Today there are few remaining structures from those years although some signs remain such as bellflowers growing wild near Main Street Elementary School which stands today unchanged since 1915 despite being eroding for over 50 years!
