The name "Bellflower" comes from the bellflowers that are found in the town. The bellflowers were chosen because they remind people of the sound of sheeps bells. The first settlers to live in Bellflower were Jacob Sargent and his wife Sarah. They started out with two cows and a pig and soon had four children. In 1887, Jacob bought some land east of Bellflower for $4 per acre. He named the land after his daughter Belle (Belle=bell). From then on, the townspeople would call themselves "Sargents". Jacob's son Julius (1885-1962) married Ethel Meeks in 1926 and they raised three children: Donald (1927-2006), Cheri (1929- present) and Julie (1945-present). They also operated a grocery store called J & J Grocery which was open until 1971. Donald served as mayor from 1951 to 1957 and 1959 to 1961; he also served on the school board from 1945 to 1951 and 1955 to 1957; he was vice president of Community Services for Kern County from 1955 to 1959; he was member of the City Council from 1951 to 1957; he died at age 91 on October 9, 2006 after servingsince 1961. Julie served on City Councilmember since her election in 2005 until she resigned effective July 1st, 2018 due to health issues caused by cancerous cells . She will be replaced by City Manager James Gomez who has been sworn into office August 7th

In 1915, the town was renamed after George Washington Bell, who had served as President of America from 1881-1885 and as Governor of New York from 1897-1901. The population of Bellflower increased rapidly during World War II; by 1943, it had reached 100 residents. However, following the war, most of the population moved away for various reasons. The last resident died in 1984. Today, there are only a few remaining buildings from when Bellflower was a thriving community full of people and commerce.
