Bellflower, California is home to the oldest continuously functioning ammunition plant in the United States. The original facility was opened in 1868 by Samuel Colt and his brother-in-law, David Rice. It became a part of the Smith & Wesson Corporation in 1899. The plant produced munitions for both U.S. military and domestic use until it closed its doors in 1976. Today, parts of the old plant are still used to produce Ammunition Production Points (APP) products that fire non-lethal rounds at distance using machineguns or rifles. The first ammunition plants were built as an answer to America's need for high quality rounds at a low cost without sacrificing accuracy or safety. These early plants were built on tall hillsides overlooking the river that served as production areas and storage yards for rounds and cannonballs. In today's world, these Ammo Production Points (APP) are used to produce non-lethal rounds that can be fired from firearms or vehicles at long ranges using machineguns or rifles

For many years it had no school; now there are three: one for girls at the high school; one for boys at the college; and a post-secondary vocational institute, also for girls.—Its churches are Episcopal (Church of England), Catholic (Catholic Diocese of Fresno), and Protestant (Methodist). Its citizens are mostly farmers and their chief occupation has been farming since before WWI.—In 1887 Mr. Pritchard built a sawmill on the South fork of Ione Creek, about two miles from town.—A gristmill followed in 1889.—In 1902 an oil well was drilled near town—the first such well drilled in this country withinsight of any human settlements.—The old mill burned down in 1905 but later bequeathed to town an engine house, five boilers, ten96 feet long by 24 feet wide with six stories,—the bell Foundry which still stands today.,—The post office was established on July 1st 1892.—All these gifts were made by Rev. Drury Wigglesworth who officiated at their dedication ceremonies,—Beloved wife Mrs. Reverend Arthur Broughton Dedicated this beautiful brick building to public use on October 15th 1897 after many years service thereto,—now known as Mrs. Pritchard's Chapel—-It is interesting to note that both Father Dedication ceremonies took place inside dedicated buildings!

The first post office was established in Bellflower on October 15, 1871. In 1907, David Lawrence built an observation tower on Topaz Hill overlooking much of what is now Callahan Valley. Lawrence was instrumental in developing many aspects of modern day Bellflower including its water supply and infrastructure. He also constructed several schools and churches within the community which remain important today. In 1935, President Franklin D Roosevelt dedicated Topaz Hill Park as Reservoir Park for all citizens to enjoy without charge (the first public parkland dedication in America). Today Topaz Hill remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bellflower despite its low population density due to its diverse scenery and attractions available free or inexpensively through various park services such as hiking trails and picnicking areas nearby.

It is located on Bellflower Boulevard and has a total area of , making it the fourth-largest city in Los Angeles County after Carson City, Inglewood and West Covina. The name "Bellflower" comes from Bell Gardens, which was once part of what was then known as Pasadena Township. The city's first post office opened in 1892.
