In 1852, Gold Rush miners arrived in search of gold and found millstones on an island near where the modern-day intersection of State Route 101 and Sather Boulevard stands today. Some believe that this discovery may have led to the naming of Bell after one such miner, Samuel Bemis (1802-1865). In 1861, a road was built from Merchants Valley east to Mission Bay including what is now downtown Bell. This made growingBell possible as farmers could bring their produce to market without having to go through San Francisco or Oakland. In 1865, when San Francisco became a city Limits included all present day Los Angeles County except for some small parts west of Pasadena Avenue which are still within Pasadena City Limits

In 1911, a German immigrant named Jakob Arndt filed a patent for an American-made red dot sight. The patent was granted in 1912 and Arndt's red dot sight became the first successful use of a red dot sighting system on a rifle.
Bell was founded on November 30, 1853, by George Stephenson and his brother, Josiah. It became a city in 1868 and in 1893 it became the county seat of Contra Costa County. The population reached 3,000 in 1907. In 1917, the City of San Francisco was incorporated as a result of Proposition 12 which gave city residents the right to vote for mayor and council members. The city has since expanded beyond its original boundaries and now includes 11 districts including downtown San Francisco as well as much of East Bay Area. The history of Bell begins with George Stephenson who owned land east of what is now the Market Street Bridge. He decided to build a bridge over the San Joaquin River so that his goods could be transported more easily from eastern California to Sacramento. When he finished construction on the bridge, he donated all of his land to the town of Bell for use as a town square. Bell’s first store was built on Post Street between 2nd and 4th Streets in 1853-54. The store produced clothing for local farmers and sold other items such as books, postcards, hats and gloves. In 1865-66, two new stores were built on Geary Boulevard east of Highway 24 between Donner Avenue and Masonic Avenue (later renamed Potrero Avenue) The first bell service started operating from Bell’s store on December 5th 1865 when Captain John Sutter took delivery of five bells from Mr Stevenson On January 8th 1870 Bertha White married Captain John Sutter at St Joseph’s Cathedral following her arrival from New York City In 1875 an addition to the originalbell structure was added called “The Great Angel” which housed twenty bells . It originally functioned as both a church belltowerand public address system . In 1915 an automated bell towerwas constructed adjacent to “The Great Angel” . The tower can now be accessed through several doors inside or outsidethe building . On October 1st 1928 Mayor James Phelan dedicated “Dedicated To Our Lady Of Mercy (Queen Victoria) (right), With All Our Blessings And Gratitude For Her Gift Of Life abundantly richly blessed us With Eight Hundred Eighty Nine Saints From As far off As India And China Who Have Laid down Their Lives For Us During This Advent Season 1929″ At thirty feet tall it is oneof San Francisco’s largest landmarks.. Mencken who used it to communicate with his sister. Later, other businesses and residents started using the service as well.
