Bell, California is a small town located in the Kern County of Southern California. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1887 by John Bell and his brother-in-law Antoine LeConte as a logging community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. In 1902, Bell bought out LeConte's share in the business and renamed it Bell Mines. The mine produced coal until 1967 when it closed after producing only 14 metric tons per year. In 1923, John Dutton established what became known as Dutton Farms near present day Belltown. Dutton operated a dairy farm that produced milk for local consumers and also raised chickens, pigs, horses and cows. He also built two churches - one in 1924 and one in 1928 - as well as an agricultural school which he used to teach farming techniques to children from nearby farms. In 1943, during World War II, General Douglas MacArthur visited bell while on his way to invade Japan and ordered its destruction because of its strategic importance within California’s Central Valley regionp The area around bell had been taped off with gas masks so that no Japanese could enter or exit without being detected.,
The first European tosight of what is now Bell, California was on July 20, 1769 when Captain Juan Rodríguez de Mendoza and his men sighted a small fire in the valley. The next day, he landed his troops at the mouth of the San Joaquín River and began exploring the area. He named the valley San Francisco after King George III of England. It wasn't until 1847 that another European saw it and named it after General Antonio José de Eliza y Costilla, who fought in Mexico's independence war against Spanish rule.
