The Bell City Unified School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The name "Bell" means "to call aloud." At one time this name was given to a large oak tree near the community site, now part of town center. A post office called Bell was established in 1878 and served until 1909. The bell tower on Main Street became known as the first stop on horseback ride tours around Kern County during the early 20th century because it provided a view of all sides of the valley floor from its height above street level. In 1922 Main Street between State and First Streets was renamed for Territorial Governor George Custer after his death in an Indian battle near Doozie Junction (now Concord). Custer's grave can be found just east of downtown on State Street between First and Second Streets. In honor of General Custer's memory, local residents have erected a small park next to Interstate 5 Exit 133A off I-5 just south of Veterans Memorial Coliseum which features an bronze statue dedicated to him by local sculptor Donny Mostowski. As part of the late 1990s USA Census American Community Survey re-estimation process some changes were made to Kern County boundaries making Bell approximately 0 square miles larger than it had been before according to official counts taken at that time – including adding 2 more square miles (3 km2) behind Unity Lake west to make up for lost territory along with 1 square mile (0.6 km2) added southward along I-385 corridor from Menifee Valley eastward creating what is now known as Jurupa Valley within present day Kern County boundaries

The first post office opened in 1877 and was named for John Bell, an early settler of this area. The current name, Bell (originally "Bellevue"), was given to the city by an act of the California Legislature on February 15, 1907. The first mayor of Bell was Wm H. Doane and he served from 1907 until 1911 when he was succeeded by A.T. Stewart who served until 1916 when he became Mayor again but resigned to become City Treasurer; his successor took over as Mayor on November 3rd, 1916 and served until January 3rd, 1922 when A P Spreckels became Mayor effective January 3RD because Wm H Doane had died suddenly only two days before being elected mayor In October 1927 voters passed a proposition to change the name of the city from Bellevue to Bell because it sounded more like Los Angeles which then had the largest population in Southern California The unemployment rate in Bell increased rapidly during World War II due to all of the people moving into town for work during that time period Bell also experienced some growth after passage of Proposition 13 which legalized same-sex marriage in California Heinz Kiester founded Kiester's Food Store here in 1959 which continues as one of downtown's most popular businesses today

In 1888, the company moved to its current location on Montgomery Street in downtown Bell. The bellhop industry became very popular after World War I and demand for service grew rapidly; the company became one of the largest employers in Bell. In 1951, Bell merged with Northern California Telephone Company to form Western Electric Corporation (WE). WE continued to grow rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s, becoming one of America's leading telecommunications companies. On October 15, 1984, WE announced that it would merge with AT&T Inc., making Bell one of America's largest telecommunications companies ever. On July 1, 1990, we merged with Time Warner Incorporated to become Turner Broadcasting System Incorporated (TVIS).
