In 1853, Bell (now part of Fresno) was founded by Captain George W. Hahn and his wife Anna. The town had been granted a land grant from the Santa Clara Valley Land Company in 1851. In 1863, the company sold the land to Benjamin Fenton for $10,000. By 1865, there were 15 businesses in Bell and 10 residents. The first gun barrel made in Bell was a 12-inch barrel that was used by John Burt to shoot game at Sutter's Fort. For many years, guns were made at Brown & Sharpe’s Rifle Shop on Market Street. However, when business retired and they closed down around 1915, all their barrels were melted down and reused as ammo for World War I ammunition production at Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Illinois (now part of Chicago). At the turn of the 20th century there were over 100 businesses in Bell but only 11 residents due to high transportation costs for goods coming into town from outlying counties. Gunmakers had to set up shop elsewhere because transportation methods changed so rapidly during this time period with steamboats becoming more common and railroads became available which allowed goods to be shipped long distances instead of being transported on small boats or wagons all the way from central California like it had been during previous centuries. "John Burt's FirstGun Barrel" is an artifact that still remains today located inside the old Sacaton Furniture store on Sacaton Boulevard east of Donner Avenue where Burt operated his gunsmith shop starting in 1858 until he died age 84 years old on December 8th 1922; This shotgun barrel has been attributed to Samuel Colt who manufactured it between 1847 and 1850."
