Bell, California was founded on July 29, 1853 by Captain John Sutter and his party of settlers. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The first post office in Bell was established on August 1, 1853. In 1854, the Mexican-American War began and the town became a military garrison. By 1865, Bell had a population of 150 people. In 1861, the United States acquired what is now Nevada from Mexico and it became part of the Union. On February 14th of that year, President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order calling for all citizens of Great Britain to come overland to America and settle in slavery or free labor plantations east of Sacramento County. Of those called for to come overland only about 10% actually arrived. Many residents of Bell turned down Lincoln's order because they saw no future in American slavery as it existed at that time. The Siege of Carson City began on November 16th 1860 and lasted until December 11th 1860 when Ulysses S Grant relieved them with 4 companies from Fort Doniphan after the fort was destroyed by an Indian attack three days earlier. This event is generally considered to be one of the bloodiest battles in American history with more than 690 casualties reported including 100 dead Native Americans and 350 US soldiers killed or wounded. On January 5th 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union General Ambrose Burnside's army near Reno which resulted in a pitched battle lasting three hours that ended with Burnside losing 9 men while Ewell lost none - this event is also generally considered one of Confederates' most successful attacks against Union forces during the Civil War period
The first permanent residents of Bell were the Native Americans, who arrived in 1776. The area was part of Spanish California and was granted to Major José Francisco de la Boca by Governor Manuel Nieto on November 7, 1821. The town was founded on December 12, 1825 by Lieutenant Colonel James Irvine as a military post near present-day Southernmost San Diego County. On March 15, 1846, Mexican citizens of San Diego petitioned for statehood and Bell became the county seat of San Diego County. In 1850, the USAAF established an airfield here for bomber training. After California became a state in 1911, the airfield became known as Imperial Valley Air Force Base (IVAFB). In 1942–1943 during World War II Operation Overlord Joint Task Force 3 (JVTF-3) used IVAFB to house fighter aircraft from nine different nations assembled under the command of Admiral Chester Nimitz. On September 2, 1944 III Bomber Command Eighth Air Force attacked Hiroshima with over 100 Boeing B-29 Superfortresses flying from IVAFBOperation Crossroads). In 1951 Valley National Labs opened at IVAFB with research into atomic weapons development and later renaming as Los Alamos National Laboratory when nuclear testing began in New Mexico in 1945. In 1957 Valley National Laboratories merged with ITER Organization Limited to form CERN which is still operating today through its network of Institutes and Centers around the world including two located in Europe – Fermi Center in Italy and Large Hadron Collider at Cern – providing powerful tools for physics exploration beyond our planet!
