Bell's beginnings date back to 1853 when cattle ranchers discovered an acacia tree on their land and named it after General José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla, who had led Mexican forces in the Battle of Buena Vista. The rancho that was acquired from Herrera y Costilla became known as Rancho San Pablo. In 1876, one year after incorporation into the township of Bell, the first post office opened in what is now downtown Bell. At that time, only men could mail letters and there were no street addresses or public transportation available outside of town center. However, citizens quickly developed a strong local presence through their participation in various civic organizations including the nascent water system, agricultural production (including fruit trees), bellowing for firewood (a common pastime during summertime) and hosting dances at various locations around town like Mission Hill and Springdale Park. The growth of Bell proceeded unabated until 1903 when oil exploration began alongshore in nearby Kern County and production increased significantly due to this new development; however,Bell never saw significant economic success because residents preferred to live within walking distance of communal amenities like libraries and schools rather than ventured out into increasingly expensive neighborhoods outside town limits.
