When Bell Dearborn Properties merged with General Motors in 1969, all of GM's assets were sold to private investors which led to Bell Gardens becoming one of the most rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods in Los Angeles County during that time period. Many high-end shops and restaurants opened up along with home prices skyrocketing making it one of the wealthiest areas in Southern California. A post office was established at Belle Ville on November 15, 1907; it remained in operation until 1959. Belle Ville's heyday coincided with Hollywood's early years as a film industry center; however, during World War II it became one of Southern California's most bombed areas due to German incendiary bombing raids against Los Angeles that killed more people than any other city or town inside of Japan during World War II combined

In 1872, a group of investors purchased land in what is now Bell Gardens from Reverend Bell and began to develop it into a neighborhood. The name "Bell Gardens" originated from the fact that there were two small bells that would toll each other to warn people of danger near the area. The first phase of development in Bell Gardens occurred between 1872 and 1880. This phase saw the construction of homes, churches, schools, and businesses as well as an increase in population. One of the most notable buildings constructed during this time was Stonington Hall, which served as both a home and school for children in the area. In 1888, another group of investors purchased property in what is now Bel-Air from Reverend Bell and began to develop it into a more upscale neighborhood.
