The Bell Gardens Rifle Scope company was founded in 1935 by George E. Atchison and his brother-in-law, Harry A. Kapp. The Atchisons were a family of rifle shooters from Long Beach, California who had moved to Bell Gardens in 1932. They began making scopes for the military and the civilian market, eventually selling their company to Carl Zeiss AG in 1937. The Zeiss rifles that were used in World War II were equipped with Zeiss optics, which allowed users to see far beyond their normal range of vision. This technology was later adapted and utilized on American battlefields during the Vietnam War. The Bell Gardens RifleScope company continued manufacturing scopes into the late 1960s and early 1970s, remaining active until 1985 when it ceased all operations due to economic conditions within the rifle scope industry as a whole. Today, there is still a small but select group of individuals who own or are collector's items associated withZeiss riflesights and optics throughout the world; these include owners of vintage rifles such as Remington 700s and Winchester Model 70s dating back to the 1930s. The store became a popular tourist destination with customers coming to buy plants, flowers, trees and tools for their gardens. In 1907, when Hollywood began developing along La Brea Avenue, phone companies began providing service to area residents on streetcars called "bell curves" because they resembled bells that had been struck with a hammer to make a sound. By 1912, most of Bell Gardens had been annexed into Hollywood; however, Rosenwald continued to operate his nursery until his death in 1945. During World War II (1939-1945), many families left Bell Gardens for military service because it was too dangerous to live within walking distance of Los Angeles or war-related jobs across town. However, many other families who remained moved into new homes built after the war around Belding Drive and Glendale Boulevard near central Bell Gardens which served as an attractive suburban center for leisure activities such as shopping and dining out during day time while keeping up with contemporary lifestyle trends at night via window shopping malls like Koreatown or Westwood Village that were opened following the postwar boom years along La Brea Avenue corridor eastward from downtown Los Angeles In 1960s bell curve neighborhoods like Echo Park were being developed adjacent to DowntownLA on one side while Beverly Hills was growing rapidly on the other side; however both areas soon lost much of their Spanish flavor due to waves of English speaking immigrants who arrived over succeeding decades In recent decades there has been an attempt by various entities including city government officials (including Mayor Eric Garcetti) private developers (such as Hines Restaurants) and home builders (such as Lennar Homes) culminating in completion by 2019 Of two mixed use developments: One focus will be residential tower/condo complexes - 5 stories or more height - each containing 155 apartments/ rooms facing north down Glendale Boulevard towards Chavez Ravine; while also a large entertainment complex composed mainly of high rises-- 10 stories or more tall-- each hosting 2 million square feet-- covering much ground between Chavez Ravine northeast corner intersection with Sepulveda Boulevard then south past Exposition Park onto Glendale Boulevard will feature office buildings/retail stores/conference halls etc . known collectively as "The Grove".

The city of Bell Gardens was established on November 30, 1884 by order of the Board of Supervisors. The original name for the city was "Lakewood". On March 17, 1888, the City Council voted to change the name to "Bell Gardens". On October 1, 1886, Bell Gardens became one of 12 cities in Los Angeles County that were incorporated as a municipality. The first mayor of Bell Gardens was Wm. E. Sloat. In 1914, Mayor J. Peddie ordered the construction of a water works system that would bring water from Lake Montecito and provide irrigation for Bell Gardens and other areas in Los Angeles County. The Work Progress Administration (WPA) funded this project which began on December 15, 1914 and ended on May 16, 1916. In 1920s and 1930s many prominent Hollywood stars such as Norma Shearer lived in or visited Bell Gardens including James Cagney and Tyrone Power . In 1932 Frank Sinatra moved into his current home at 5551 Crescent Avenue after purchasing it from Harry Cohn when he retired from Consolidated Oil Company following their merger with Standard Oil Co..
