Bell Gardens was founded in 1887 by Dr. Julius Vogt, a German immigrant who had arrived in California as a doctor. Vogt and his wife, Anna, started a small hospital on the corner of Bell and Norton Streets. The first patient was an American girl named Clara Barton. In 1890, Anna Vogt donated land to the city for a public park. The park was named after her daughter, Emily Griffith Park.
