Bell Gardens, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name of the city comes from two families who donated land for a public park there in 1887: James and Esther Brougham. The first people to live in what is now Bell Gardens were Indian tribes who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1885, John Sutter founded the Sutter's Fort Colony on some of this land and began mining gold here. By 1886, most of this gold had been mined out and Sutter decided to move his colonists downriver to American Canyon where he built an adobe rancho that became known as Rancho La Brea after his wife's family name (La Brea). In 1893, Thomas Edison established his famous electric lighting plant here onrancho La Brea that still powers many homes in Bell Gardens today. In 1907, Jepson purchased about three-quarters of Rancho La Brea from Thomas Edison for $1 million cash which made him one of the richest men in America at that time. Jepson renamed it Hollywood because he wanted Hollywood Boulevard in Beverly Hills to be called "Jepson Street". However, since then Hollywood has changed hands several times and its original name has never again been given back to it – it currently stands as Bellagio Drive/Hollywood Boulevard (see map below). In 1916 Eileen Barton developed her own popular softball game called "Barton Park" near her home on Ridgecrest Drive just east of Mulholland Drive (now Home plate drive at Dodger Stadium). It was played there until 1949 when Elysian Fields was developed nearby with larger stadiums housing both professional baseball and football games; those stadiums are now known as Chavez Ravine Park (above) and Memorial Stadium (below), respectively. It was during World War II when much activity took place within bellagio boundaries due to military barracks being constructed nearby; these barracks became home to various industries like shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing while also hosting a large number of servicemen and women during their stay. One such activity which took place withinbellagio boundaries was entertainment production by MGM Studios using surplus munitions left over from World War II’s bombing raids against Japan; this production would eventually lead to MGM becoming one of movie industry’s largest producers through its acquisition by Time-Warner Bros.. The Bell Gardens neighborhood of Los Angeles, California was developed from the early 1830s until the early 1960s. The area now known as Bell Gardens was originally part of what is now Orange County. In 1835, Spanish landowner José Gabriel Buitrago purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) in what is nowBell Gardens from rancho owner Manuel Nieto. He named it La Habana after his native Cuba. In 1848, Buitrago sold title to two brothers, Domingo and Nicolás de la Vega y los Reyes for $2,000. In 1850 they subdivided the land and started to build homes. One of their first properties was a small home on Santa Fe Boulevard that they called "El Bosque". They also started a cattle business and built a new gristmill on Canoga Park Boulevard in 1851. By 1870, some residents had enough and formed the First Mexican American Citizens League to promote community interests including education, health care and reform of local government structures. The group lobbied for annexation by Southern California but this effort failed due to lack of support from high-ranking Pershing Heights residents like Pio Pico who resided in San Diego County at the time. As early as 1876, members of an Anglo-Saxon family began purchasing property in Bell Gardens east of Carson Street near Canoga Park Boulevard where they founded what is today's City National Bank building on central square lot formerly used as a garage for their carriage company and other businesses designed by British architect John Norrington with construction supervised by his brother Edward Norrington beginning in 1886 said: "When we got here we found that all our neighbors were Anglo Saxons so we bought up all around us". By 1888 whenNorrington moved away he had created one of Los Angeles' most prestigious neighborhoods characterized by fine mansions dating back to Doniphanian times with five stories or more with lush gardens behind each; Today'sbellgarden Neighborhood contains these old residences along with several dozen new ones erected over the past few decades not only reflecting America's highest standards but also meeting current trends throughout LA
